History TT Assen

Dutch TT through the years

The first Dutch TT was held on Saturday, July 11, 1925. There was still no question of a 'real' circuit. They were races on the public road. The 28.4 km long road triangle served as a circuit between Rolde (start / finish), Borger and Schoonloo.
As organizer, the Motorclub 'Assen & Omstreken', founded in 1922, was founded.
The following year the second Dutch TT moved to Assen where, just south of the capital of Drenthe, a new 16.5 km long track was found. This functioned until the 24th TT in 1954, annually - except for the period 1940-1945 - as a circuit.
In 1936, the organization of the TT changed from the Motorclub Assen to the specially founded Stichting Circuit van Drenthe and in 1939 the fifteenth Dutch TT was held. Then the Second World War caused a break of six years.
In 1946 the thread was picked up again, albeit only nationally, but from 1947 the Dutch TT was again an international event. The circuit of Assen is the only one on the calendar, where since the introduction of the FIM world championship in 1949, every year a race has been held.

With the 25th Dutch TT in 1955 the specially built 7.7 km long circuit was put into use and that new circuit also meant that the sidecars could also be added to the program.
The circuit built in 1955 underwent a complete renovation in 1984. With the shortening of the north loop, the length was reduced by 1.5 km to 6.1 km.
In 1989 the accommodation was renewed and expanded considerably and the width of the runway was increased by an addition of 3 meters to 10 meters.
In 1992 the current TT Circuit Assen was permanently withdrawn from public traffic for the first time.
After the end of the 2003 season a further improvement of the public accommodation was worked on. There was also a beautiful motor park where some 12,000 motorbikes could be parked on concrete strips via jiffy or centerstand.

Since 2006 the famous north loop has disappeared and the circuit has been shortened further. Over the years, much has been done to adapt the circuit to modern times. Last year a beautiful new stand was delivered in the Haarbocht, this year the Winterdijk stand will be completely renewed.
In 2015, the agreement with promoter Dorna for the maintenance of the MotoGP was extended until 2026. With this, the TT Circuit Assen is assured of motorsport at the highest level in the world until 2026.
